New publication from the FEMglocal project

“Contemporary Portuguese feminist activisms through the analysis of the International Feminist Strike website: subversive revolt and counterpower” is the latest article by Carla Cerqueira, Célia Taborda, and Ana Sofia Pereira, published in the Journal of Gender Studies.

Developed within the scope of the FEMglocal – Glocal feminist movements: interactions and contradictions research project, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds (PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021 / DOI 10.54499/PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021), the article examines how the International Feminist Strike – launched in 2017 to redefine International Women’s Day – has been discursively framed as a tool of resistance and counterpower.

The study focuses on the Rede 8 de Março website through a Foucauldian discourse analysis. It acts as both an archival and memorial space for discursive objects such as images, photographs, texts, posters, banners, and pamphlets.

The findings show how the feminist strike is represented as a subversive force that transcends the conventional notion of a strike. It addresses both productive and reproductive labour while challenging neoliberal capitalist structures.
