New publication by Selma Pereira highlights digital narratives in online higher education

A new article co-authored by MeLCi Lab member Selma Pereira, António Maneira, and Adérito Fernandes-Marcos has been published by IEEE, contributing to current discussions on innovation in online teaching.

Titled Digital Narratives as Academic Projects for Resilient and Culturally Sustainable Online Teaching, the study focuses on the pedagogical potential of digital narratives in higher education. According to the abstract, the article proposes a comprehensive framework for integrating narrative-based projects into online learning, emphasising their capacity to foster engagement, cultural exchange, and the inclusion of individual perspectives within global learning environments.

The authors highlight how personal digital narratives can support inclusive pedagogies, promote intercultural understanding, and strengthen resilience in the context of globalisation. Drawing on literature review, student projects, and participant feedback, the study shows that digital storytelling can deepen empathetic cultural understanding, help preserve intangible cultural heritage, and contribute to both individual and collective identity formation.

The article also points to the growing role of accessible technologies and AI-assisted tools in enhancing creativity, inclusion, and reflective practice in online education. It ultimately advocates for the ethical and thoughtful integration of digital narratives to foster more culturally sensitive and transformative learning experiences.
