Herminder Kaur to lead workshop on video diaries, disability and participatory research
An online workshop titled “Researching With, Not On: Video Diaries, Disability and Participatory Methodologies” will take place on 29 October 2026 at 16:00, led by Dr Herminder Kaur, Lecturer in Ethics and Research Management at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine.
Ana Filipa Oliveira, a member of MeLCi Lab, is organising the session through the Communication and Education Working Group of the Portuguese Association of Communication Sciences (SOPCOM), in partnership with ECREA’s Children, Youth and Media Section. It will explore how participatory approaches can challenge power relationships between researchers and participants.
Drawing on Kaur’s video-diary research with young people with physical disabilities, the workshop will examine how visual methods can give participants greater control over how they communicate their experiences and what they choose to share. It will also consider what these approaches reveal that traditional research methods may overlook.
Through interactive online activities, participants will reflect on accessibility, representation, and researcher positionality, alongside ethical questions about consent, safeguarding, privacy, and ownership and control of data.
Kaur’s research spans digital sociology, disability, digital inequalities and participatory methodologies. She also serves as ECREA’s General Secretary and a member of its Governing Body.
Participation is free, with registration required. Further information and registration are available through the workshop registration form.
