CICANT researchers participate in the Future of Journalism Conference in Cardiff (UK)

Four CICANT researchers took part in the Future of Journalism Conference, hosted by the School of Journalism, Media and Culture (JOMEC) at Cardiff University, on 11–12 September 2025. Recognised as one of the most established conferences in the field in Europe, the event brought together scholars from across the globe.
The CICANT team contributed seven presentations to the programme:
- Professor Sónia Lamy presented “Should We Talk About Activist Journalism? How Portuguese Journalism Frames Feminist Struggles”, co-authored with Carla Cerqueira.
- Assistant Professor Ilo Alexandre presented “Headlines Are Dead? Long Live the FYP: How Portuguese News Outlets Are Using TikTok.”
- Researcher James Dennis presented “Disconnected but Not Disengaged? How Social Inequality Shapes Young People’s Experiences of Political Communication During the 2024 UK General Election.”
- Postdoctoral researcher Lucia Mesquita presented three papers: “Collaborative Perspectives on Fact-Checking in the Global South”, “Fact-Checking in South America: Multimedia Strategies to Fight Disinformation”, and “Silencing the Press: Lawfare as a Tool Against Press Freedom.” She also chaired the session “Business Models and Sustainability.”
- PhD student Maria Gonçalves presented “The Future of Independent Journalism in Europe: Between Sustainability and Crisis.”
