FEMglocal at “Onde (Não) Estavam Elas?”: Reassessing Women’s Historical Visibility

On March 8, International Women’s Day, the Braga Municipal Archive hosted “Onde (Não) Estavam Elas?” (“Where (Weren’t) They?”), a thought-provoking discussion on the historical visibility of women in the city’s photographic records. The event explored the roles of Braga’s women in public and private spaces and the impact of the Carnation Revolution on their representation.

FEMglocal researcher Vanessa Ribeiro Rodrigues moderated the discussion, which featured insights from Carla Cerqueira (FEMglocal’s Principal Investigator), Ana Macedo (a historian specializing in family archives), and Inês Lapa (a multidisciplinary artist engaged in community projects). Together, they critically examined the representation of women in historical memory and visual culture.

Developed under the artistic direction of PELE, this event not only marked International Women’s Day but also launched a broader initiative to reevaluate women’s historical presence through archival materials.
