FEMglocal publishes article “Analysing opinion voices in Portuguese newspapers: Who fights for feminists versus who is afraid of feminists?”

Carla Cerqueira, Principal Investigator of the project FEMglocal – Glocal feminist movements: interactions and contradictions, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) through national funds (PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021 / DOI 10.54499/PTDC/COM-CSS/4049/2021), has published an article in the European Journal of Communication (EJC), as part of the special dossier on gender, media, and democracy. In this article, she reflects on the voices present in the opinion sections of the Portuguese press, using the #MeToo movement as a case study. Marking the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action and its strategic objective on media, the researcher highlights the importance of analysing not only representation/content and reception/audiences, but also the sphere of media production. The study examines the absence of certain voices and presences in opinion spaces, the dominant topics addressed, and how these discussions contribute, or fail to contribute, to advancing the debate on sexual harassment and violence in the Portuguese context.
