MeLCi Lab Member Tatiana Contributes Chapter on Russian Independent Media Strategies

Tatiana Chervyakova, a member of our MeLCi Lab, has authored a chapter in the newly released book Kremlin Media Wars: Censorship and Control Since the Invasion of Ukraine. Her chapter, “Tactics of Russia’s Independent Media During the War in Ukraine,” analyzes how seven independent Russian media outlets have adapted to persist and resist amid escalating censorship following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

The study identifies four primary tactics: relocation, diversification of funding, alternative message delivery methods, and strategic language use. These approaches have been crucial for the survival of independent journalism in Russia, enabling media outlets to uphold their role in the anti-war movement and continue providing unbiased information under challenging circumstances.

The book is now available through Routledge.
